Autumn, the wedding industry and Narnia

Do you love or hate autumn? When there’s a crisp chill in the air, you wake up in darkness at 7am, the heating goes on and winter woollies come out – do you hide or rush out to play in the rusty leaves?

I had the idea of a new wedding blog post with my friend and Tiararama designer Suzanne Laughlin: to shout out and share the things we love about autumn. Because at the end of the wedding season the wedding industry doesn’t sleep: instead, we get inspired. The smell of autumn on the air, the hazy sunshine and being all toasty inside… it kicks off that creative buzz. I wanted to share some of that with you!

Tiararama’s bridal collections are inspired by the seasons. Suzanne explains why autumn is such an inspiration for her bridal designs:

“The thing I love about autumn is that it is a season of two parts….it starts off with the last throes of the summer’s warmth but has a wonderful golden hue to the light which stays with us up until the clocks go back and then we get that cold, dark excited feeling from bonfire night through to Christmas. It is an elegant, reflective time of year which replaces the warmth of the summer with a warmth of colour.

Autumn Rose: a beautiful asymmetric tiara with a lovely warmth, fantastic for autumn weddings.

“I always wanted to get married in the Autumn and I always loved October half term as that was always around my Mum’s birthday so getting married a few days before then was just fab for me… the trees were golden, it was a beautiful sunny day with a bright blue sky and then it turned into a crisp evening and night. We had our honeymoon in Cape Cod and Boston – the perfect time of year to view the Fall. Beautiful colours and light – cold, sunny beaches, still silvery ponds…. ninja squirrels throwing nuts at us!”

 The Wedding Calligrapher on Autumn…

“For me autumn turns the sunshine into something more precious: we huddle inside in our jumpers while it rains and blows, and then once in a while the sun comes out and everywhere has a golden glow to it – it feels magical. Outside the air smells fresh and going for a walk is a crispy, crunchy experience. Autumn makes me feel more alive, and the natural world becomes such a blaze of unexpected colour I can’t help but feel inspired to create new designs in response.

The copperplate style of calligraphy is perfect for an autumn or winter wedding. Swirly, romantic, wonderfully indulgent for the calligrapher to write – and in a rich red ink to warm a luxurious wedding reception when it’s raining and blustery outside.

  • As a wedding photographer it is hard not to love autumn! The sun low in the sky creating beautiful light and colours meaning the summers harsh contrast is forgotten and we can now explore areas we could not just a few months or even weeks earlier; along with the colours of the leaves as they slowly wilt creating new and glorious backdrops if but for a few short weeks. The other advantages being despite the new bitter winds and biting cold no longer are we having to contend with the summers groom sweating through his suit…maybe the odd blue bride or two but nothing that can’t be fixed with a bit of colour correction 😉
Autumn brings a new sense of joy to a wedding, in that the squinting guest from the summer now see’s the bride in all her beauty and lights up ‘click’ and its caught for prosperity.
As a wedding photographer you have to love the Autumn.
And more importantly; not forgetting……I was born in October 🙂

I’ve got to agree with Jamie up there, Autumn is most definitely my favourite month and I’m not even a professional wedding photographer (a very amateur one, admittedly). I love the light, the colours of the leaves on the trees, the smell of bonfires in the air, the chilly but still bright days before the gloom of winter really kicks in. A great season country walks, oh and getting married!
