For a perfect, faultless and impeccable wedding day, you’d do well to copy That Royal Wedding – every bride and groom hope their day will go smoothly. From the Aston Martin DB 5 to Kate Middleton’s dress, everything seemed to have been taken care of and went without a hitch.
For those of us without access to footmen or ladies in waiting, getting the details right is all down to the bride and groom. Forewarned is forearmed, they say – so we’ve looked at the Top 5 Wedding Hitches and what you can do to minimise the impact to your Big Day.
Top 5 Wedding Hitches
According to the Guardian newspaper, the top five things that can go wrong at a wedding are:
- The car. You need to get to your wedding in one piece, on time, serene and in style. Your groom will be waiting for just the right amount of time, guests will be ready, anticipating your arrival and looking forward to your grand entrance.
Make sure everything goes to plan by hiring a reputable wedding car company. Check their reputation, ask if they have a back up plan if you’re worried. Are they insured?
If you’re using your own car – and good for you if you are! – then as well as giving the outside a good polish and hoovering the upholstery, make sure any odd banging noises in the engine have been sorted, and any little car hiccups are fixed in plenty of time for your big day!
Those of you adventuring along in your vintage VW or if you have a 1940s bus in the back of the garage, make sure you get breakdown cover just in case!

- The wedding dress. If you’re spending hundreds on a dress you’ll wear once, you want it to be perfect. So take care of it before and during your wedding.
Choose a bridal shop with a great reputation and be sure you trust the staff there to get the fitting just right for your wedding day. Enjoy your fittings, and if you don’t… shop around and find a better bridal store!
On the day, ask your Chief Bridesmaid to pack an emergency repair kit, including a sewing kit, nail polish remover, make up remover, wet wipes and possibly a miniature brandy! If you spill a bit of wine, or catch the dress on something, at least one of the above will help fix it!
After your wedding, buy a keepsake box big enough to store your wedding dress and keep it beautiful – maybe for a photo shoot or for your grand daughter to wear on her wedding day, you never know!
- Your make up. If you’re doing your own, find some tips online for making it look great in your wedding photos: normal coverage won’t be enough for the camera, especially if your photographer will use a flash.
Keeping your make up in place takes a bit of attention: if you hire a professional to do your wedding make up, then they’ll help fix everything in place and use good quality products that will last the day.
But you can still carry an emergency make up kit. This can be used throughout the day to touch up any make up emergencies, particularly before the photos are taken.
- The wedding venue. There’s so much involved, from the décor to catering and more… make sure your photographer is familiar with the venue and knows what equipment they’ll need. (Dark, atmospheric castle? Make sure they’ve shot there before!)
A survey by Wedding Magazine found that venue problems ranged from poor lighting to unexpected building works. Take the time to get to know the venue and triple check every detail with your wedding co-ordinator, just in case.
- The DJ. Hire a professional wedding DJ and make sure they’re experienced and carry your favourite tunes!
Your DJ should have insurance and ask you to sign a contract: even the party guy should be a professional, if you want to be reassured that your wedding will run without a hitch.
