Thought for the day

A few key concerns come up again and again when I listen to brides… weddings on a budget, pressure to meet friends & family’s expectations, and the challenge of creating a unique and personal wedding.

All of these worries make sense to me, but I really think it’s possible to bypass them all if you can think creatively about your wedding. Creatively enough so that your friends and family have to throw all their preconceptions out of the window: then they can relax and enjoy your wedding.

How to have an alternative, affordable, family-friendly wedding

Make it different, first. Choose an unusual location, outdoor ceremony, colourful (non-wedding) dress, exotic buffet and unexpected timings for your day.

The less familiar the concept of your day, the easier it will be for guests to forget their preconceptions and enjoy your alternative wedding.

Read the articles on the English Wedding blog entitled Get Grounded. It’s all about starting from scratch: you need two people who want to get married, then you can pick and choose whichever other things you’d like to make your wedding day out of.

Thinking about your wedding from the ground up in this way will help you keep your budget way down. Part of having an alternative wedding is skipping the cake, the flowers, the DJ, the sit down meal and speeches. Naturally you’ll save a bit of money!

If you’re having a creative, affordable wedding day I’d love to hear about it! Has your family embraced your alternative wedding? Pop a comment in the box below if you have a minute.

Claire, we recieve enquiries from brides, looking for help on this very same subject regularly.
Brides have some wonderful ideas, but they are often lack the confidence to air them as they feel they should follow tradition. We actively encourage them to go with thier ideas, as just as you say in your post, a bride can often save money, which is not a a bad thing especially in this current economic climate.

Blogs are a wonderful source of inspiration for brides on a budget. I love blog hopping and seeing the creativity which goes into weddings and personally I find that the smaller budget weddings often have more wow factor as so much thought has gone in to them.

  • We skipped having a cake at our wedding (we didn’t even have an alternative solution). We didn’t feel the need for a kodak moment, and keeping a tier for future children was not going to happen. Nobody noticed that we didn’t have one. So cut out some of the tradition, and the chances are nobody will even comment on it. Weddings are about the two who are getting married and what their individuality and them making the most of their day.

One of my brides had a traditional but rule breaking wedding in the Ritz. It was a treat for anyone who had never had the tea there (teas have become very fashionable with the cup cake culture!) people drank more tea than champagne (though that was available) and the bride looked fabulous in a very traditional white dress. A couple of hours so there were fewer costs to stump up but the bride and groom gave everyone and enjoyed a lifelong memory.
