WeddingsByRyan has been on my radar for months now, and as a regular admirer of photographer Jonathan Ryan’s blog I was really happy when he volunteered for an English Wedding mini-interview! His answers are very entertaining… enjoy.
What inspires you?
Light, action, colour, drama.
I spend more time flicking through fashion magazines than looking at other wedding photographers’ work. I also get inspiration from films, TV, art.
About once a week I’ll wake up early in the morning with an image so clear in my mind that it could have been painted on the ceiling. Other times I’ll be driving along the road and see a particular pattern of light and think “wow – I could use that…”.
What do you love most about your work?
That I get to do it. I spent years working in an office and I still find it hard to believe that I can get up every morning and do new and exciting things and call it “work”.
Day to day my job involves problem solving, dealing with people, waiting for light and occasionally pressing a button or two. I love that it’s so different, so varied and so cool.
I still get a childish thrill out of telling people I’m a photographer. And even more of a thrill when an image I’ve dreamed of for days appears on the screen!
Do you ever get unusual requests?
I think I figured out once that over half of my clients use the phrase “now this is a bit unusual but…” at some point. Dogs in diamanté jewellery, brides jumping out of trees, surprise confetti bombs and lots of things involving cats stick in the mind.
But there have been loads more. I think pretty much everybody has something unusual they want and I’m just glad that my clients trust me enough to share these ideas with me.
Do you have any exciting projects coming up?
I’m working on a conceptual bridal fashion collection. It takes the underwater bridal shoot I did as a starting point and gets much wilder and more inventive!
It’s taking a lot of planning and organisation to bring together but it’s one of those projects where I can’t wait to share the results.
I already have every detail “photographed” in my head. It’s just the tricky matter of getting it on camera.
What one piece of advice would you give readers of English Wedding?
Like they say in X-Men – “Trust a few, fear the rest”. Pick a couple of friends you know are on the same wavelength as you and don’t bother listening to anybody else. It’s your day – let it be about you rather than what was “traditional” before you were born. Do what you want. With luck you’ll never get another chance.
Jonathan – thank you. I hope you’ll give me a shout when your exciting new project has come to fruition: I’m intrigued already!
