Why wedding blogs rock — and what the magazines can never do!

wedding blogs vs magazines in the uk rose veil credit cardI almost had a crisis of faith in wedding blogging recently. It was one of those scary moments that hit you sometimes — I picked up a wedding magazine (that wasn’t the scary bit) and it wasn’t what I expected.

Wedding magazines were all about big brands and vaguely old fashioned trends, I thought. The appeal of the big wedding blogs is always from being edgy and challenging, alternative and fresh — tearing away from the boring old wedding mags.

Wedding blogger photoshoot: mystery locations, fire, magic and crash helmets

Ciao ragazzi!

Ciao ragazzi!

In the interest of maintaining a pretty distinct niche for English Wedding, my latest photoshoot was all about creativity: having a blast and enjoying the experience. And please do forgive me for a self indulgent blog post today!

While the other UK wedding bloggers look amazing in their vintage wedding dresses and accessories, as a calligrapher and artist I like to be a little different. (Just as the weddings I love most of all have something a little unique about them.)

English Wedding — friends and followers

If there’s one phrase I use far too often it’s “I’m rubbish at facebook”! If you follow me on twitter you’re probably familiar with that one.… but twitter is a different matter altogther.

English Wedding blog on twitter

Twitter I can do. @english_wedding has 2,735 followers on twitter. I tweet most days, sometimes just to say what’s on the blog that day, sometimes to ask for help with future blog posts and to ask for opinions on wedding topics.

Occasionally, as has happened today (did you spot it?) you’ll see a little snippet of my secret future plans for English Wedding revealed by accident. If you missed that one, make sure you’re following @english_wedding now!

English Wedding best of 2010: discussions

It’s brilliant to get a debate going on English Wedding, and we’ve had some good discussions this year about the UK wedding industry in particular.

English Wedding blog - the demise of the wedding directoryThe wedding industry doesn’t have the best reputation, and while most of us love what we do and put our hearts and souls into running wedding businesses, there are others who just want to take our money and yours and run off with it.

One example — old fashioned, boring and useless online wedding directories. We had a lively discussion about the demise of the old fashioned directory site here at English Wedding! There’ll be more where that came from in 2011.

English Wedding best of 2010: real wedding

Another favourite wedding featured this year was from March — in this case it’s the wedding dress I absolutely adore: the vibrant red is out of this world. Bride Gemma is stunning and wedding photographer Amy Wass is one very talented lady. Enjoy!

English Wedding best of 2010: vintage wedding

This gorgeous vintage inspired wedding has a special place in my mind — when I think about the weddings I’ve blogged over the year, Vanessa and Michael’s day always makes me smile. Manchester wedding photographer Neil Redfern captured some incredible images of the reception at The Barlow Institute which positively glow with gorgeousness.

English Wedding: it’s all about You!

Writing a wedding blog is one of those things that makes you really think about your world. It’s easy to settle inside a little blogging bubble, but more fun to pop your head out and look at the world from time to time.

I want English Wedding to be all about you, and not about me. I encourage comments, emails and tweets (@english_wedding) and I love hearing about your wedding planning triumphs and worries: being able to help you is best of all.

Top UK wedding tweeter

Hmmm… an interesting little list of the ‘top 100 UK wedding tweeters’ has appeared this week. As you can see by the little logo I’ve added to the left of my blog, I am quite impressed.

That’s all to do with the fact that @English_Wedding is hovering around about number 11. Which isn’t half bad! And there’s some great company up there, with leading wedding bloggers Love My Dress and Rock n Roll Bride in the top few as well.

Coming soon… me!

I received an order on Twitter a few weeks ago: something along the lines of, “Right, Mrs, you’re going to write an About Me page, and I’m taking your photo for it.” Cue me falling off my chair and squealing, as said tweet was from the inimitable genius that is Chris Hanley.

I’ve dieted for 3 weeks and lost nearly a stone I think — still a happy, chunky size 16, mind — and today I had my photoshoot with Chris and his lovely wife Claire (of Cherish the Dress fame). I’m still on a high, I haven’t seen any of the pictures yet and I can’t wait. (Still a bag of nerves though!)
