Sandhole Oak Barn is a very individual wedding venue near Congleton. Overlooking a private lake and with all the best bits of one of those surprise puddings (outside looks nice; inside is amazing!), it's a really special place and should definitely be on your list if you're looking at Cheshire wedding venues.

Photographer thoughts on Sandhole Oak Barn

Top Cheshire wedding photographer Chris Hanley says, "Sandhole Oak Barn is a venue which has emerged from a farm diversifying and offering its space and buildings to the wedding and conference market. The initial impression is its a bit farmy, but turning the corner, the view of the barn and the lake is quite lovely. It reminds me of an Amish settlement.

The barn itself is spacious and light. The daylight flooding in through the windows into the space were the ceremony takes place is great. Great views across the lake, lovely outside area for drinks and canopy reception. The outside catering we experienced was exceptional, the bar was well managed, and all staff and the owners were warm and welcoming.

What isn’t so good is the energy saving artificial lighting in combination with yellowish/brown timber. It’s a classic example of a venue selling itself to the wedding market with no thought to photography. Great wedding photography at a venue will sell the venue to future brides and grooms. Venues should get feedback from photographers. It really can be only one or two minor tweaks that take you from average to outstanding.

If it’s wet and windy and you’re confined to indoors then things could be quite tight depending on your number of guests, and with it being a barn your guests will all be accumulated in one area.

Situated just off the main A34 road to Congleton means its location is quite a distance to travel. You’ll need to evaluate travel costs for coaches and taxis. There are 17 ensuite rooms at good rates, so driving and staying over is affordable.”

From the Sandhole Oak Barn website

Having visited Sandhole today, I would recommend all brides-to-be in the area to consider this as a venue. First impressions as you approach it may not be the fairytale sweeping drive that all princesses dream of, but it has a very unique feel to it. (Once you get past the hay barrels and tractors!) The view from the barn is beautiful and the lake that it sits on is it’s selling point. Inside it is more of a blank canvas, with wooden beams and medieval chandeliers as its only strong features. For me that’s important as it doesn’t matter how well coordinated your colour theme is — if it has to fight with a patterned green carpet you’re going to struggle to make everything work as a whole. This venue will definitely make my (oops, i mean OUR) short list, but i’m currently enjoying the process too much to commit and say it’s ‘the one’ for us!

Thank you Miss POSH for your comment — and best of luck with your search, it sounds like you’re having a great time! Will you let me know when you find ‘the one’?! Claire x
