The English Wedding blog was launched to showcase contemporary English weddings, and I’m delighted to have this stunning day to share with you. Rosie Parsons photographed Derek and Shella’s wedding back in October, and captured a wonderfully creative mix of tradition and modern styles on the day.
The wedding ceremony was held on the river Thames, in Henley’s River and Rowing Museum! I love the choice of venue for the wedding, and it goes to show you don’t have to stick with a stately home or hotel to have your wedding — choose a fun location to make your wedding really memorable.
The bride and groom look happy posing for the camera… and even happier sharing the excitement of the moment with each other! Rosie captures their feelings so well on every photograph. I love the backdrop for these pictures — it’s so different!
These are two of my favourite pictures, in Rosie’s inimitable style. The first captures a private moment for the bride and groom, while the second tells me they were king and queen of the world at that moment in time!
Folding a thousand paper cranes is a Japanese wedding tradition bringing luck to the bride and groom. It kind of follows… if you put that much time into anything you deserve some good luck afterwards! They way these cranes are displayed is lovely — they’re traditionally hung on 25 strings of 40 cranes.
Shella’s place settings are very contemporary, bright and full of colour. I love the idea of having different colours at a wedding. Why stick to one colour when you can have twenty?!
Shella and Derek draw on other English traditions for parts of their wedding day… this funky seaside photo booth is brilliant!
Rosie carries on shooting as night falls, where more of the paper cranes are lit up to show their vibrant colours. The wedding teepee is fabulous. Contemporary English weddings use imagination like this to be really memorable. To find out more about hiring a teepee for your wedding, go to Beautiful World Tents.

Stella has had the perfect wedding day — and Rosie Parsons has captured every wonderful moment from the first to the last.
At the end of the night, Rosie is still photographing the memorable moments for our bride and groom, and it’s the little memories a great photographer will help you keep. I highly recommend a visit to Rosie’s wedding photography blog, where you can see more photos of this English wedding including the passing boat which appeared to be full of happy pirates!
Thank you so much to Rosie for letting me share this — the first contemporary English wedding on my blog.

Hi Claire,
Did you do a wedding show many years ago now at a conference centre in Manchester? I think it may have been in 2002 near Manhester Uni (I can’t remember for the life of me what the place was called but it was through a lady who ran Exceptional Events).
Is it yooooouu!?
I was the girl opposite you — we ended up chatting most of the day as it was so quite.
xx
Hi Clare,
Yes I remember — how are you?! Ooh that Manchester wedding show was an odd one. It was in conjunction with a charity radio competition that all fell through in the end… such a shame it was a big show, but the tumbleweed-to-bride-ratio was a little high!
I remember the lady next to you as well, she was promoting keep fit and at one point had a bride exercising on the floor in the middle of the room on her own — that was an interesting one!
How are things? Send me a quick email and I’ll add a listing on here for you & we can have a chat!
